Our pupils access a rich and very broad array of high-quality opportunities: academic, social and co-curricular. In this way, they discover strengths and natural aptitudes they may never have realised, and grow in confidence and aspiration for their futures.
We know every More House pupil to be clever. Our specialist approach in every classroom – for every age-group and every subject – is carefully designed to foster in pupils a realisation of their own potential and efficacy. Many join our school with little or no self-belief and find classroom learning, and their future, frightening. They may also struggle to listen and learn, and have great difficulty processing classroom language, verbal and written. Through deliberate adaptation of teaching methods, we ensure all pupils thrive in our learning environment, acquire the skills to be successful, make the best possible progress and achieve the best possible outcomes.
At More House School, we recognise that every pupil has unique strengths and talents. While some may initially face challenges with age-expected attainment levels, we know their true potential shines across a broad and enriching curriculum. Whether excelling in problem-solving through Computer Science, Computer-Aided Design and Engineering, or showcasing creativity in the Performing Arts and Visual Arts, our pupils thrive when given the opportunity to explore and develop their abilities. By providing a broad, academic curriculum, we empower pupils to discover their strengths, embrace challenges, and build confidence while receiving the support they need to improve in their areas for development.
Tracking of pupils’ progress forms an essential element of the school’s provision, informing teaching, therapy, parents and support. The school provides the following feedback:
- Half-Termly Progress Monitoring Grades
- Annual School Report
- Parents’ Evenings
- Annual Reviews
Importantly, our empowering model of inclusive education does not accommodate one-to-one classroom support or withdrawal from class to work alone or in a small group. We recognise the detrimental social impact of such practices, the ineffective high provision costs associated with them, and the damage to pupils’ academic and social confidence, independence and self-belief. Instead, our approach to classroom learning promotes every pupil’s independence and aspiration. Therapeutic provision is holistic and integrated throughout the school, and direct tuition is delivered by qualified therapists and specialist tutors. Every student at More House School accesses the Learning Development Centre (LDC), built into their individual timetable. To find out more about LDC support at More House, visit the Our Specialist Approach page.
Pupils begin and end their day with their Form Tutor. Registration is at 8:30am and 4:00pm and there are six teaching periods each day, each one lasting around 55 minutes. We adopt a two-week timetable structure and every other Friday we host ‘Flexi Friday’. Flexi Fridays allow pupils to undertake a range of supra-curricular activities focused on a specific subject or theme. Recent examples have included sushi masterclasses for the Junior Years, a Royal Institution Science Day for Junior and Middle Years pupils, a Physical Education Ninja Warrior trip for Year Eight and a Year Nine Pythagoras Day. Off-campus learning is an essential element of a More House education, and other recent visits include a senior years’ Humanities visit to Italy’s Bay of Naples, trips to live theatre and musical performances, sports tours, an annual ski trip, a performance tour to New York for school music ensembles, Activities Week year-group residentials, and a World Challenge expedition to Tanzania.
At the heart of our school’s approach to teaching and learning is an evidence-informed, whole-class, adaptive teaching approach for every age group and every subject. This is carefully designed to foster in pupils a realisation of their own potential and efficacy, and is delivered through deliberate adaptation of teaching methods to ensure that all pupils can access the learning and acquire the skills they need to be successful. Our specialist ‘Learning Beyond the Label’ approach, supported by the latest research from the universities of Cambridge and East Anglia, empowers pupils to make the best possible progress and achieve the best possible outcomes, both academically and socially, transforming their futures. The breadth of the More House School curriculum reflects the diversity of our pupils and their individual talents, interests, abilities and aptitudes. Classes normally comprise between ten and fourteen pupils, allowing for adaptation of learning, lower sensory demands and effective academic support. Our curriculum allows pupils to unlock their academic potential and succeed in public examinations, whilst preparing them for an aspirational future and lifelong love of learning. Curiosity and a passion for learning are encouraged daily and we nurture pupils to become the most successful version of themselves.
