This World Bee Day, More House School is buzzing — quite literally! Our school community has very recently hit an exciting milestone: our first honey harvest!
Since last summer, More House has become home to not one, but two thriving beehives, tended by our dedicated Beekeeping Club. The newest hive was recently installed and is already abuzz with activity. Our Bee Team checked in last week and they’re settling in well.
Last week, Mr Aldred, Mr Lewis, Stew and our beekeeping pupils suited up and begun the hands-on honey extraction process. They carefully removed the supers from the original hive, uncapped the frames with a hot knife, spun the honey, filtered it, and poured it into jars. The grand total? A whopping 24lbs of “Mmm… More Honey!”
And of course, the team had to taste the fruits of their labour. Their verdict?
“Delicious!”
“Give me More!”
“Like summer in your mouth!”
“Really floral.”
These glowing reviews were followed by a proud presentation of the first official jar to our school’s amazing catering team — just in time for a honey-themed World Bee Day feast!
The Bee Day banquet included:
- Pulled pork with honey wraps
- Fig and ricotta tart with hot honey drizzle
- Minted new potatoes, Sautéed courgettes, Honey-roasted carrots
- Devonshire Honey Cake with custard
There was even a honey tasting station, where everyone could sample our very own More House honey. It went down very well!
But this celebration isn’t just about tasty treats. The More House bees are bringing long-lasting benefits to our community:
- New skills and passions in Beekeeping Club
- Delicious, sustainable ingredients for our catering team
- Positive impact on our local ecosystems through pollination
Who knows… perhaps a third hive could be on the horizon?
