ISA Specialist Provision Report – the crucial role of independent schools in SEND education

On 1st May the Independent Schools Association (ISA) published a major new national report on the essential role independent schools play in supporting children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). At a time when demand for specialist SEND provision is rising, the report explains that independent specialist schools do not stand in the way of more inclusive mainstream classrooms — they are vital to the functioning of the SEND system.

More House School is highlighted throughout the report as a standout example of effective, research‑led inclusive SEND practice. Our innovative teaching model, holistic and integrated therapeutic support, and strong academic outcomes are repeatedly used to demonstrate what high‑quality independent specialist settings can achieve. The report shows how More House effectively meets the complex needs within our own school community, whilst also supporting other independent and state-maintained schools across the country. The ISA emphasise that this approach directly aligns with national ambitions for more inclusive mainstream provision. It is described as a cost‑effective proven example of how specialist expertise can strengthen the wider education system.

The report highlights that ISA member schools now educate more than 11,000 pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), alongside many more with complex needs. It shows how independent schools provide a vital option when state-maintained provision is overstretched. By funding their own staff, therapy, and infrastructure, independent schools help prevent placement breakdowns and costly emergency interventions, offering stability, continuity of education and a sense of belonging.

For More House, being so prominently featured in a national report on such a relevant topic in education is a proud moment. It reinforces our position as a leader in specialist SEND education and emphasises the importance of independent schools being active voices in the national conversation about how best to support children with SEND.
