Headmaster's Welcome

Transformative independent boarding and day school for boys with literacy and language-related special educational needs, including Dyslexia and Developmental Language Disorder.

Welcome to More House School!

Empowering bright boys and young men to transform their futures, in spite of challenges they may face with literacy and language processing, we offer a unique, mainstream academic education, realising remarkable academic and social success.  Set in nearly thirty acres on the edge of the Surrey Hills, we are the largest and leading specialist school in the country.

Our innovative approach, with proven success over three decades, supports our students to discover their natural aptitudes and to pursue a broad and rich curriculum leading to GCSEs, A’ Levels and the BTEC equivalents.  They become proud of themselves and aspirational for their futures.  A majority progress from our Sixth Form to a breadth of universities; others pursue apprenticeships and other education and employment pathways.

Before arriving at More House, many neurodiverse children have struggled in their previous school settings to make the progress of which they are capable.  Their self-esteem and confidence are weak, and they find it easier to recognise their skill-weaknesses rather than speak of their strengths.  Many are nervous about the future, and do not realise how clever they really are.

Underpinned by pioneering university-led research, in our classrooms each teacher, in every subject discipline, practises high-quality adaptive teaching which looks beyond a student’s diagnostic label and, instead, focuses on supporting the four key learning functions of language, attention, memory and processing.  Our students also attend, together with their peers, timetabled therapeutic intervention sessions in our celebrated Learning Development Centre, delivered by our very large team of in-house Speech & Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and specialist Dyslexia Literacy and Numeracy Tutors.

Despite pupils once fearing they might not succeed in education, we consistently achieve public examination results which beat the national averages, and our students discover their ambition for a bright, aspirational future.

A wealth of enrichment and co-curricular opportunities plays a fundamental role in building our students’ self-belief, and includes an array of lunchtime and after-school clubs and activities, music and drama ensembles, sports teams and competitions, day and residential trips – domestic and international.

At the centre of our community are our boarders, who stay overnight in school.  They are supported by our dedicated residential house team and enjoy the full complement of our campus’ extensive facilities beyond the school day, forming friendships which continue well beyond school.

More House now delivers training and consultancy to a range of other educational settings and professionals, working with state-maintained and independent primary and secondary schools and groups, and collaborating in ongoing university research.

Founded in 1939, for over 86 years our school has maintained a consistent focus on supporting boys who might underachieve elsewhere, to fulfil a potential they may never have realised.   We believe wholeheartedly in an approach which is genuinely inclusive and unashamedly aspirational for every pupil, rooted in our community’s shared values of kindness, spirit and responsibility.

I hope this website offers you an exciting first glimpse of our exceptional school and transformative model of education, and I hope that you will want to visit us in person. Let’s empower your son to transform his future.

Yours sincerely,
Jonathan Hetherington
