Amazing Punch & Judy Performance

On the morning of Friday, February 28th, Year 8 pupils were treated to a spectacular Punch & Judy show, written and performed by the very talented Year 8 pupil, Oscar! The show was the highlight of the morning assembly, leaving everyone in the audience thoroughly entertained.

Oscar’s dedication and creativity were on full display as he brought this classic puppet show to life, not just as the performer but as the mastermind behind every aspect of the production. The puppets and stage were all hand-crafted by Oscar, his father, and his grandfather, using papier-mâché, clay, and fabric to create intricately designed characters and props. The stage front, painted by Oscar himself, was a true work of art.

Oscar’s performance was full of energy, confidence, and wit. He cleverly crafted a story that stuck to the classic Punch & Judy style, complete with hilarious jokes, sausages, slapstick fight scenes… and even a crocodile! Throughout the show, Oscar demonstrated a real knack for involving the audience, reacting to their comments and keeping everyone hooked. The show ended with loud cheers and applause from the audience, a fitting response to his fantastic performance.

We are so proud of Oscar for sharing his passion for puppetry and performance with us. It was also clear from the reactions of his friends and peers that the show had made a lasting impression:

“That was actually so cool”

“So funny when Mr Punch dropped the baby”

“I really liked the crocodile, the bit with the sausages was so funny!”

“That was class”

“I didn’t know Oscar could do that, well good!”

Mr. Hetherington was in the audience and was often the first to shout back at Mr. Punch, adding to the fun and excitement. The Headmaster shared his thoughts after the show:

It was an absolute joy to find myself, along with the audience of Year Sevens and Year Eights, enthralled by Oscar’s highly professional and articulate Punch & Judy Show performance this morning, in our Simkins Centre for the Performing Arts. From the exceptionally crafted Punch & Judy stage, to the intricate character models, to Oscar’s superbly written and delivered script – I was so impressed. Oscar’s performance held the whole audience spellbound. I offer him my hearty congratulations on a job well done… and award him a Headmaster’s Commendation, which conveys ten house-points!”

Mr. Aldred, Head of Drama, also praised Oscar’s remarkable performance:

FIVE STARS - It was a display of comedy genius from puppet master Oscar, who built the set, created the puppets, wrote the script, and performed it with aplomb. Not only did he have Punch, Judy, a crocodile (including a reference to Peter Pan) and a host of other characters at his fingertips – he also had the audience in the palm of his hands. Bravo Oscar, a star is born.”

We couldn’t be more thrilled for Oscar and forward to seeing what other creative talents he shares with us next!
