The More House approach to learning offers a wide and varied curriculum tailored to suit the individual needs and talents of all our pupils. Our carousel of GCSE option subjects, offered during year 9, helps the boys to make informed choices about which subjects to study to GCSE, culminating in public examinations.

We are an approved centre for exams offered by AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC and CIE, and we are constantly reviewing the syllabuses offered by each exam board to ensure that we are providing the most suitable programme of learning for our students.

All More House pupils are assessed in our Learning Development Centre before an exam series to ensure they receive the correct support for their individual needs, in order for them to gain full access to the exam papers and controlled assessments or coursework, and to do themselves justice in their answers.

GCSE Years

More House students usually take up to nine GCSEs. As well as the core subjects of English, Maths and Science, we encourage:

  • Creativity - Fine Art, Ceramics, Animation and Photography
  • Performance - Music and Drama
  • Design and technology - Product Design and Resistant Materials
  • Business insight - Business Studies, Business & Communication Systems and Computer Science
  • Curiosity into human culture - History, Geography, Religious Studies, Psychology and Leisure & Tourism
  • Physical Education for the sporting enthusiast

For more able students we offer English Literature, Further Maths and the individual science subjects of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. For those who benefit from a more practical approach, without exams, we offer Level 2 BTEC qualifications in Media Studies and Countryside Management.

A-Level Study

Boys are encouraged to stay on to our VI form and most will study up to three A-levels or BTEC qualifications, all of which provide a sound platform for progress to higher education or the beginnings of a career.

We currently offer:- GCE A-level Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, English Literature, Geography, History, ICT, Maths, Music, Music Technology, Performing Arts, Photography, Physics and Product Design.

We also offer the following Level 3 BTEC subjects for those who prefer a more coursework-centred approach to learning:- Art and Design, Media Studies, Sport and Countryside Management.

Staff work hard to assist students to achieve their full potential, through their initial choice of GCSE subjects, until they finally leave More House at the end of year 11 or VI form, and we look forward to welcoming them back in the November following their exams, to an informal evening in which we present their exam certificates.
